If you're reading this, chances are I've sent you this link, you've seen it on my Facebook page, or you're randomly here. Whatever the circumstances, welcome. Enjoy your stay.
This will be a blog about my impending nuptials, and what we're (the "we" is my fiance Kevin and me) doing to get ready. It'll be from my perspective, as my dubiously better half has requested not to take part in this. That's cool. I'm better with words than him, anyway. And you never know - he might make a special guest appearance someday. Each post will discuss something different. (I have another blog for my occasional rants, so the rantiness will be limited here.)
So, I'll do quick introductions if you don't know who we are, and a quick rundown of the wedding party.
My name is Meredith. I'll be 27 in less than two weeks, and I live somewhere on Connecticut's beautiful Shoreline. I'm from here originally - born in the bustling metropolis of New Haven, grew up an only child in the suburbs, went to high school in another busy city (ha!), attended college in a lot of different places (two places in-state, one in Westchester County, New York, and wound up graduating from a medium-sized "art school" in Boston), and moved back here to live with Kevin. I'm a book editor for a medium-sized non-fiction publishing house somewhere in this state.
Kevin's from Jersey. He's 29. Similar story to mine, except he has a sister and didn't go to four different colleges. He works as a design engineer for a contract firm somewhere in this state as well.
We bought our first house last August, and have no immediate plans to leave. We love it here.
Kevin and I have been together since I was 20 and he was 23. (That's just about 7 years, for all you non-math majors out there.) We've been through the usual relationship trials (long-distance relationship for a year and a half, losing jobs, getting new jobs, wondering whether or not we should still be together, etc.) but have gotten through it all with a smile on our faces - and a ring on my finger. Our secret? We don't have one. Sorry.
We have a cat. Murphy's been ours for close to a year. I got her five years ago, but have happily extended the role of co-parent to Kevin. She keeps us distracted with all of her cat shenanigans, of which there are many.
Enough about us. Let's talk about the people who signed on for our day of insanity. (We're only going to tackle my side, as Kevin's still getting his side together.)
I have eight attendants. Yes, eight. The way I see it is this: I'm getting married once. I want certain people up there with me when I do it. I have everyone I want now, and that's all there is to it. That's all there is to it. OK? :)
Family:
Maid of Honor: My aunt. She and I are very close - almost like a mother/daughter relationship with a dash of best friend and confidante thrown in for good measure.
Bridesmaid: Christina. My second cousin, and one of my trusted wedding advisors. As a veteran bridesmaid, she brings a lot to the table experience-wise. Plus, she has a very dry sense of humor, which is always appreciated.
Bridesmaid: Kristin. Another second cousin. She's brilliant, trustworthy, reads as much as I do, and she can be a lot of fun during family gatherings.
Bridesmaid: Kim. Kevin's sister. She's a newbie to being a bridesmaid, but really excited. She, like Kristin, is fantastic to talk to during family gatherings (Kev's side.)
Bridesmaid: Danna. Kim's daughter. She's 16, and is just starting to come into her own. Future career goal: cosmetic dentist.
Friends:
Bridesmaid: Melanie. My partner in crime for close to 13 years. She wields her intelligence like a weapon, and God help you if you get her mad. She and I have been to a million different sushi places, but share a not-so-secret love for Miya's in New Haven. She's wickedly funny with flawless taste in Lush products, bread, and Jane Austen novels.
Bridesmaid: Danielle. We met at choir practice in 2003, and have been friends ever since. We share a passion for live concerts, delicious cheeseburgers, the convoluted world of book publishing, and the 24-hour-a-day cartoon channel that Disney World shows at all their hotels.
Bridesmaid: Nichole. We met at Emerson, and subsequently saw each other twice over an 18-month span. She is my Starbucks partner, Brookstone accomplice, and restaurant buddy. She works about 4 times harder than anyone, and it shows.
So that's it for today. Next up: the when and where for the wedding.
